If you said "that guy is a real loony person", it would mean that he is a clumsy person. The name of the Loon originated in the Shetland Islands, from the Norse lumme or lom which means "lame" or "clumsy". This is because the loon can barely walk on land. I can attest to this because when I found a chick on the highway I noticed that it was having such a difficult time walking. First I thought that it was injured. But when I returned it to the water the chick swam away like a real champion.
Photo Copyright Fred Kaethler We have all seen a loon jump out of the water, wings a slashing like it was ready to defend itself. Not the case though. All it is doing is repositioning its feathers and cleaning them up. So forget the thought that the loon is in attack mode. It is simply doing maintenance, "feather care". There is a lot more that can be said about the loon and its ways. In any of life experiences it is one of the most awesome to experience nature children in their own habitat. Nature has taken eons to parent all these creatures. You might wonder why I used the word parent! Simply, all of us have what we call parents, mothers and fathers. Nature is the parent of all of us. When we look at a creature such as the loon we are not just looking at a bird but a product of evolution that nature took so very long to make. |
